What does a beer company do to hedge against slowing growth in its main business? In the case of the parent company of Corona, the answer is to invest heavily in the marijuana industry. Constellation Brands, which also makes Robert Mondavi wine and Svedka vodka, announced on Wednesday that it had invested $4 billion in Canopy Growth, a publicly traded Canadian cannabis producer.
With Donald Trump subverting America’s global standing – feuding with allies, palling around with dictators, snatching toddlers from migrant mothers – Justin Trudeau just may be the leader of the Free World. Starting this week, the prime minister’s youthful, forward-looking Canada is now also the leader of the weed world.
In a shade over two months, on Oct. 17, history will be made. After months of debate in Parliament, and years of promises from Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, recreational marijuana will become officially legal in Canada and go on sale in private and government-owned dispensaries.
To say that legalized cannabis is a big deal would be a big understatement. Though estimates vary wildly given that no industrialized country has ever given the green light to adult-use weed before, the industry could be looking at adding $5 billion in yearly sales. This would come atop the hundreds of millions of dollars the legal pot industry has been generating from domestic weed sales and exports to foreign countries where medical marijuana is legal.
*Matty Rock, CEO of Matty Rock Inc, and a Drew Estate Icon, sits down with SGDGmagazine to share his extraordinary relationship with the cigar sub-culture, as well as shed some insight on the man beyond the eccentric suits, lattes and cigars!
Please enjoy the following Interview:
Several years ago, I saw a photo on Facebook of a quirky bearded man wearing a patterned suit with playing cards on the fabric. There was a cigar in his hand, which had silver rings depicting the Drew Estate cigar brand logo, and one of the funniest expressions on his face. He was posing in the picture with someone at a cigar event. I was amused yet fascinated and thought, “Who is this guy”. I soon found out that this character I had seen was Matty Rock! Matty left an unforgettable impression on me in a matter of seconds as well as a smile on my face for the entirety of the day. Immediately, I sent him a Facebook friend request- and the rest was history.
Attorney General Jeff Sessions’ views on cannabis became more evident than ever last week when he made public his decision to repeal the Cole Memo, an Obama-era memorandum that has essentially protected state-legal cannabis businesses from federal prosecution.
While this move didn’t surprise anyone, the following information may come as a shock: Sessions’ position on marijuana might not even be representative of his home state, Alabama, often considered a conservative, deep-South red state.

Cannabis laws are being reformed in many states throughout America, and similar changes are being made all over the world as people are learning more about the benefits that can be obtained from this plant with the not-so-positive reputation. While the one-and-only Amsterdam, Netherlands has been known as the place for marijuana-friendly tourists to vacation, some people would prefer to escape to a warmer, perhaps even tropical, destination. Now that laws are being reformed, there are many warm-climate destinations joining the realm of marijuana tourism.
